Failing to yield the right of way is one of the leading causes of crashes in BC.
Intersections are the worst spots for failure-to-yield crashes. Be hyper-vigilant. Especially when making left turns. Look everywhere and check over your shoulder.
DON’T BE DISTRACTED
Keep your attention solely on driving. Don’t use your phone. Don’t eat or drink. In short, don’t multitask.
When you speed, you don’t give yourself enough time to react especially to the unexpected like a child rushing out to get a ball or a sudden stop by a car in front of you. Speed also increases the intensity of a crash.
Be sure to watch how other drivers around you are behaving. Keep an eye out for people driving recklessly and avoid them. Always keep yourself at a slight distance from other cars in case you need to stop or swerve quickly.
LOAD THE CAR CAREFULLY
Secure groceries, luggage and other items that might move around while your driving. If an item drops on the floor, pull over to pick it up. Don’t try to do it while driving.
KEEP WHAT YOU NEED HANDY
Keep garage passes and toll fees where you can easily reach them.
DON’T DRIVE UNDER THE INFLUENCE
Even one drink can impair your judgement and reaction time. Keep in mind too that some medications can cause drowsiness.
